Title of film: Up In Smoke (Trailer)

Madagascar is one of the world’s “hottest” biodiversity hotspots, which means it is home to a high number of species that are only found in Madagascar and nowhere else in the world. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) estimated that 94% of lemur species—all of which are only found in Madagascar— are threatened due to human-induced habitat disturbance.

Uncontrolled fires have played a major role in the loss of forest cover in Madagascar. Unfortunately, Madagascar also suffers from immense poverty, and people often exploit the habitat simply to feed their families. Community involvement, education, and direct financial benefits are needed if the lemurs and the remaining forest are to be protected in one of the world’s poorest countries. This film will highlight issues of human-wildlife interactions in Madagascar and will illustrate why a healthy ecosystem is beneficial to both humans and wildlife.
